Chant of the Roman Missal

OCP Mass chant

Celebration of Advent-Our parish will be trying to incorporate the solemn music of the Roman Missal for the season of Advent. In preparation for Christmas, the Church invites it’s faithful to simplification and solemnization of our liturgy.  The Roman Missal states that “The main place should be given, all things being equal, to Gregorian chant, as being proper to the Roman Liturgy.” (General Instructions to the Roman Missal #41) The instructions allow, “Other kinds of sacred music, in particular polyphony, are in no way excluded, provided that they correspond to the spirit of the liturgical action and that they foster the participation of all the faithful”  and yet the clear preference are the universal chant modes.   Our parish will attempt to use the new chant modes in the Roman Missal to enhance our preparation times of Advent and Lent.  A single sheet has been placed in each hymnal, Rose for English and Latin, and Blue for the Spanish setting.  Hopefully in a short time, our congregation will know these settings by heart for fully participating in the liturgy.   Please be prepared to use the Penitential rite B followed by the sung Kyrie in Greek for these seasons of Advent and Lent.
